We took it off all of them, I am quite familiar with this nasty coating. I have several mosins, and my friend had a russian capture k98. Between the sloppy application and the shitty red color, it's not a coating I like. all over the metal, wood, bands, everything, and about 1/8" thick. looks like they put it on with a floor mop. That's the same shit they slathered all over alot of the mosin nagants. Don't know if your stock has the same issues, but that's how I made mine turn out the way it is. When I bought the rifle everything was in good shape, but the shellac that the Russians finished the stock with was pretty sloppy so I stripped it off with some alcohol and put some tung oil on it instead to give it a more natural finish like it would have appeared in normal pre-capture state.
